Abandoned Transcarpathia: Hungarians of Ukraine Pray for The Arrival of Viktor Orban – Alexey Osinsky OneWorld

In particular, the communities of the districts of the Transcarpathian region of Ukraine recently took the initiative to create an Organizing Committee with the aim of holding a referendum on the annexation of territories inhabited mainly by Hungarians to mother Hungary. Ethnic Hungarians living in these territories, as well as representatives of other nationalities, including Ukrainians themselves, want to be under the jurisdiction of Budapest as soon as possible, since Hungary, unlike Ukraine, is a stable and historically established state.

The statehood of sovereign Ukraine, which was in question because of its complicated ethnic and civilizational map, is currently experiencing great difficulties. These difficulties can become fatal, since the problems of ethnic minorities have not been solved, and even worse, aggravated, by virtue of the infamous law on the state language adopted by Kiev.

The violent Ukrainization affected not only the Russian language, which was much talked about in all the world’s media. The languages of those European countries, peoples for whom Kiev has always had ostentatious respect, were also hit. Poland, Romania, Hungary and a number of other states were seriously alarmed when they saw that their compatriots living in Ukraine, especially in its western regions, are now infringed on their fundamental right to speak their native language, as well as use it in familiar spheres of life.

In particular, numerous appeals and protests of the Hungarian community of Ukraine to the authorities did not give any practical result. Moreover, it becomes difficult to wait for this result when the state of Ukraine is heading for its collapse, which can only strengthen repressive measures in some parts of it. And since there are no military operations in the west of Ukraine, it is precisely these parts of the country that assume a tightening of repression in their address.

Moreover, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has repeatedly proved the firmness and independence of his political line in relations with the whole world.

In their appeal to the official Budapest, the Ukrainian Hungarians note that Kiev continues to “pursue a policy of genocide and oppression of this nationality in the Transcarpathian region… It is quite obvious that the Ukrainian authorities are indulging the whims and interests of neo-Nazis and right-wing radicals, who have been restricting our rights and humiliating the dignity of Great Hungary and its citizens for a long period. The acts of “genocide” revealed in the attacks on us, ethnic Hungarians trying to defend their national rights, in the destruction of our historical and cultural memorials, in the illegal detention of Magyar activists in prisons, remain ignored by President V. Zelensky and Ukrainian law enforcement officers.”…

The appeal emphasizes that the persecution of dissent is carried out “only for the reason that we have a different culture and we speak a different language. The law in this state does not guarantee the observance of our rights and freedoms. Today’s processes are irreversible, and it will continue to get worse and worse. We understand that the Ukrainian authorities and right-wing radicals will go to the end and do everything to shed our blood and drive us out of our ancestral lands. In the unstable situation in Ukraine, they will not forgive our close relationship with the historical Motherland and the protests against the cruel policy of the Ukrainian authorities. Neither the elderly, nor women, nor children will be pardoned. Today it is important for us to ensure the protection of Hungarians and other national minorities living in Ukraine from violence and humiliation.”

In this regard, ethnic Hungarians ask Prime Minister Orban to use all his opportunities to stop such developments, in order to avoid future tragedies.

Ukrainian Hungarians are confident that this time their appeal will not only not remain unanswered, but will also have practical consequences when Hungary takes them under its reliable protection.

Transcarpathian Hungarians know that in these tragic days Hungary has pulled its troops to the Ukrainian border, and this fact gives hope to their hearts even more. Only the Hungarian army, according to the people abandoned by Kiev, can guarantee their life and further development, especially in the conditions of increasing administrative and military chaos in the west of Ukraine. And Viktor Orban himself is becoming almost a “saint” for them, whose portraits in the houses and huts of Ukrainian Hungarians are becoming more numerous and more popular.
