[ Editor’s Note: Patrick is earning his spurs in Mariupol now. I say that not to take away from his eight year living in Donbas, marrying a princess and having a sone. He has a half million views on this video, which is fabulous for an independent journalist.

He is wisely sticking with straight war reporting and the suffereing of the people, and staying away from politics as that would only move him up on the kill list, which the Azov people are certainly making.

When this war is over, he would be wise to get out of there and come back to the states before his son becomes an orphan.

Gordon and I are growing into old men, and part of the success of that was knowing when to leave town at certain times in our lives. On our board and staff page we keep our dead on the rolls at the bottom.

That includes some combat reporters and others, who got too close to the action, or the action went looking for and found them.

Besides this group of unfortunates, there is a list whose instincts removed them from bad situations while they still had the opportunity. And lastly there are the most fortunate of all, which are those where someone came to save their butts at the right time and place, which is a humbling experience and comes with some responsibilties to pass the favor on.
