The BRICS countries, where almost half of the world’s population lives, are emerging as the main driving force of the world economy. This was said by Russian Ambassador to China Igor Morgulov during a panel discussion on BRICS prospects at the Global Peace Forum at Tsinghua University. He noted that the rates of economic growth in the BRICS countries continue to significantly exceed the world average.
The total area of the countries of the association occupies more than a third of the Earth’s territory and almost half of the planet’s population lives in them. “The total GDP of the group already exceeds that of the countries of the Group of Seven and will increase in the future,” said Morgulov.
BRICS participates in the formation of the global agenda, protecting common interests and offering its vision for the future world order, the diplomat noted. There is no dominant force in the association. “With joint efforts, we managed to create a culture of dialogue in the BRICS, based on mutual respect for development paths and respect for the interests of others. This helps the participants find a common language and solutions to the most difficult problems,” Morgulov stressed.
“The organization offers the world ideas and measures to achieve the goals of sustainable development, ensuring food and energy security and healthy growth of the world economy,” the diplomat said, and also offers measures to combat the change of the climate, including through a just energy transition.
The Global Peace Forum has been held annually since 2012 by Tsinghua University, one of the leading universities in China and the world. It is attended by diplomats, representatives of government departments and experts in international relations from the PRC and other countries. The main theme of the event: “Improving Global Security Governance: Equity, Unity and Cooperation”.
