During his visit to Moscow the Syrian Foreign Minister warned of Damascus’ capabilities to retaliate against ongoing airstrikes by Israel. On 21 February the Foreign Minister of Syria, Faysal Mikdad, held bilateral with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov in Moscow. The two diplomats discussed the political, social and economic developments in West Asia and Europe.
Speaking during the meeting, Mikdad thanked Lavrov for the help the Kremlin has been rendering to Damascus in its fight against western-backed armed group that have been fighting to oust the Syrian government since 2011.
He stated that: “The main goal of our two countries is that peace, stability, freedom and equality prevail in today’s world. In this field, it is necessary to underline the important and key role that Russia, under the leadership of President Vladimir Putin, plays in promoting security and stability not only in the Middle East but in Europe now.”
Lavrov responded by saying that Russia will continue with its efforts to find a diplomatic solution to the conflict in Syria. He also called on the US to end its illegal occupation of the country.
“Essentially, they have occupied the eastern bank of the Euphrates River, they deprive the legal Syrian authorities of access to hydrocarbon resources and grain food resources. We talked about that today, I think it’s unacceptable,” said Lavrov.
The foreign minister also denounced the continued Israeli airstrikes on Syria. He said the airstrikes are not only a violation of Syria’s sovereignty, but are also hampering the fight against the western-backed armed groups.
Meanwhile, Mikdad warned that Syria will be forced to retaliate if the Israeli occupation continues with its unprovoked attacks. Speaking during an interview with RT, the Syrian top diplomat said Damascus has the means and capabilities to respond to the attacks by Tel Aviv.
Israel has carried out hundreds of airstrikes on Syria since 2011 when war broke out between Damascus and western-backed militias.
