On August 21, 2024, the New York Times published quite a long material that The US Department of Justice had launched an investigation into American citizens who had connections with Russian state television networks. To do this, the FBI raided the homes of two people who are well-known commentators in order, as they say, “to blunt attempts to influence the November’s elections.“
The authors mention only two people who are quite well known to the Russian audience – former United Nations weapons inspector and critic of American foreign policy Scott Ritter and TV presenter Dimitri K. Simes, an adviser to former President Donald Trump’s first presidential campaign in 2016.
Prosecutors have not announced charges against either of the men, although police seized Scott Ritter’s mobile phones, computers and hard drives. Earlier, when trying to fly out of the United States to participate in the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, his passport was taken away while passing through airport passport control.
The New York Times reports that “for a third time, according to the officials and public statements, the Kremlin’s propaganda apparatus has thrown itself behind Mr. Trump’s candidacy, creating online news outlets and fake videos to denigrate President Biden and, more recently, Ms. Harris. The investigation so far has focused on potential violations of the economic sanctions imposed on Russia after its invasion of Ukraine and a law that requires the disclosure of lobbying efforts on behalf of foreign governments. The government’s investigation is politically fraught, reprising the furiously partisan debate over Russia’s influence in the 2016 presidential campaign. By targeting Americans working with news organizations, even if they are state-run, the inquiry could also bump up against the First Amendment’s protection of rights to free speech.”
Indeed, such intrusions into the privacy of American citizens clearly represent an instrument of repression and harsh censorship. Although, if we talk about the First Amendment of the US Constitution, representatives of civil society have repeatedly been silenced there — both students protesting against Israel‘s actions in Palestine, and journalists covering various topics from an independent angle or criticizing the actions of the White House.
The publication clearly distorts the facts about whose victory they would like to see in Moscow. Russian President Vladimir Putin said quite unequivocally in February 2024 that Joe Biden‘s victory would be preferable.
Apparently, because of his failed policy in all directions, which turned many states away from the United States and pushed them to cooperate with Russia. But the mouthpiece of the neoliberal globalists prefers to put forward their arguments in line with politically correct narratives pleasing to the government and corporate oligarchic media, which represent only an additional tool of power and manipulation both over their own citizens and the other world.
By the way, the same authors wrote in July about some pro-Russian bots that use artificial intelligence to to spread propagandaon social networks. Not only the special services of the United States, but also partner countries such as Canada and the Netherlands were thrown into the fight against them. Then, at the request of the US Justice Department, as many as 968 inauthentic accounts on X (former Twitter) were closed.
Going back to the recent FBI raids, it is known that “Ritter, who traveled to Russia and to occupied parts of Ukraine in January, said the warrant to search his home made reference to an investigation that involved the Foreign Agents Registration Act, the federal law that requires Americans to disclose lobbying and political activities on behalf of foreign governments.”
As for Dimitri Simes, he “is being investigated for, among other crimes, violations of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, the legal foundation for imposing economic sanctions.”
However, now Simes himself is in Russia and he is not in danger of imprisonment. If the Justice Department decides to take harsh measures against him, it is unlikely that Moscow will extradite him to the US. Although his property may be seized.
By the way, Simes was previously an advisor to Richard Nixon, and later worked at his analytical center, established in 1994. But now, due to a certain fashion and trend towards Russophobia, he has fallen into disgrace with the American establishment.
It is obvious that the “deep state“ saw some conspiracy attempts in the actions of these two US citizens, which are being implemented jointly with the Russian special services. Although such speculative reasoning should not have legal consequences, in the United States, which, as the Americans themselves say, is “the land of opportunity”, there is also such an opportunity as well.
What could be hidden under these attacks and why did they become possible? What are the objective reasons for this behavior of the punitive machine?
First, not only the consciousness of local politicians and security forces, but also ordinary people has a conspiracy matrix. And it didn‘t even start in the years of the Cold War, but back after gaining independence from Britain, and by the 18th century, the topic of conspiracy had become a commonly used means of explaining political processes.
Only later did appear Soviet spies, UFOs, conspiracies of Masons and secret societies, secret CIA projects (which, by the way, actually took place), as well as reptiloids and, more recently, Chinese, Iranian, North Korean and Russian agents.
Secondly, it should be remembered about the various lobby structures and the work of political action committees, which have degenerated into troll factories and have become more involved in black PR, rather than advertising the prowess of their own candidates. And for the elections in November, some people want to eliminate as many independent opinion leaders as possible. However, judging by the ongoing election campaign, both sides do not shy away from pouring barrels of slop on each other, hoping to denigrate the opposite side and, thus, win over the votes of electorate.
Thirdly, against the backdrop of intellectual degradation in the United States, which is especially shows itself in the now ruling Democratic Party (and Joe Biden acts as a symbol of dementia), this country clearly lacks rationality, a certain sanity, if we speak in terms of Aristotle (this is how he defined practical knowledge – fronesis in his book “Nicomachean Ethics“, the necessary for everyday decision–making, as opposed to the more abstract wisdom that Plato and Socrates talked about).
It is clear that the United States is making the wrong decisions at right now. And this applies not only to the case of Ritter and Simes, but also to the broader political and international agenda.
