Trump Revives Push To Acquire Greenland, Calls It An ‘Absolute Necessity’ For National Security And Global Freedom – Jim Hᴏft

President-elect Donald Trump has reignited his ambition for U.S. ownership and control of Greenland, declaring it an “absolute necessity” for national security and global freedom.

This renewed interest, first expressed during his initial term, was announced alongside his selection of PayPal co-founder Ken Howery as the U.S. ambassador to Denmark.

In a statement released on Truth Social, Trump wrote:

I am pleased to announce Ken Howery as my choice for United States Ambassador to the Kingdom of Denmark. Ken is a World renowned entrepreneur, investor, and public servant, who served our Nation brilliantly during my First Term as U.S. Ambassador to Sweden, where he led efforts to increase Defense, Security, and Economic Cooperation between our Countries.

As a Co-Founder of PayPal and venture capital fund, Founders Fund, Ken turned American Innovation and Tech leadership into Global success stories, and that experience will be invaluable in representing us abroad.

For purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity. Ken will do a wonderful job in representing the interests of the United States. Thank you Ken, and congratulations!

In August 2019, during his first term, President Donald Trump expressed interest in purchasing Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark.

He discussed the idea with his advisers, suggesting that acquiring the island could be strategically beneficial for the United States.

The proposal was met with firm rejections from both Greenlandic and Danish officials. Greenland’s government stated, “We’re open for business, not for sale.”

Trump’s renewed interest in Greenland follows his recent demand for Panama to return control of the Panama Canal to the U.S., a proposition that has been firmly rejected by Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino.

On Saturday, Trump warned that the United States could seize back the Panama Canal unless the country agrees to lower its costs and counter Chinese influence.

“The United States has a vested interest in the secure, efficient, and reliable operation of the Panama Canal, and that was always understood. We would and will NEVER let it fall into the wrong hands! It was not given for the benefit of others, but merely as a token of cooperation with us and Panama. If the principles, both moral and legal, of this magnanimous gesture of giving are not followed, then we will demand that the Panama Canal be returned to us, in full, and without question. To the Officials of Panama, please be guided accordingly!” Trump said on Truth Social.

On Sunday, Panama’s president fired back at Trump in a video statement.

“As President, I want to express clearly that every square meter of the Panama Canal and its adjacent zone belongs to Panama, and will continue to do so,” Mulino said in video statement. “The sovereignty and independence of our country are not negotiable.”

“The Canal is not under direct or indirect control, neither by China, nor by the European Community, nor by the United States, nor by any other power,” Mulino said. “As a Panamanian, I strongly reject any manifestation that distorts this reality.”

“Panama respects other nations and demands respect,” he added.

Later Sunday, President Trump responded, “We’ll see about that!”
