A US military base in the Koniko natural gas field, in the northeastern Syrian governorate of Deir Ezzor, came under attack by missile fire on the evening of 8 March, reportedly causing significant material damages.
According to media reports, a number of US warplanes were seen flying over the area following the attack. Explosions were also heard near the Al-Jufra oil field, in the northeastern countryside of Deir Ezzor.
“The [US] bases established by the [US] army in the eastern countryside of Deir Ezzor, eastern Syria, were subjected to an unknown missile attack at dawn today, followed by a comprehensive mobilization of [US] forces, accompanied by warplanes flying across the area,” a Sputnik correspondent said.
Local sources confirmed that large explosions were heard throughout the eastern countryside of Deir Ezzor, followed by the implementation of a tight security perimeter and the mobilization of ground and air forces.
“The missile attack on the US forces in the oil and gas fields led to significant material damage in the place, but it was not possible to determine the number of possible human losses in the ranks of the US army due to a tightening of security restrictions following the attack,” the sources added.
The Al-Omar oil field, the largest Syrian oil field illegally occupied by US forces, was subjected to a similar missile attack two days ago, the source of which was also unknown.
The presence of US forces in Syria is illegal under international law, as troop deployment in Syria was implemented without the consent of the Syrian government or the UN.
On 6 March, residents from eastern Syria drove away a US military convoy in Tal Ahmed in the Qamishli countryside when the convoy attempted to enter the village, which is under the control of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA).
Dozens of residents from Makhrom town, southwest of Al-Hasakah city, also protested against the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which successfully led to the expulsion of SDF representatives from the village.
