Next Canadian PM Mark Carney: We Cannot Let Donald Trump Succeed
Former Canadian and UK central bank head Mark Carney will become the next prime minister, expected to replace Justin Trudeau this week after the governing Liberal Party elected him to be its next leader on Sunday. There will likely be a new election shortly after he assumes the office.
CARNEY: There is someone who’s trying to weaken our economy.
[boos]
Yeah, Donald Trump.
[more boos]
As the Prime Minister just said, Donald Trump has imposed unjustified tariffs on what we build, what we sell, and how we make a living. He’s attacking Canadian families, workers, and businesses, but we cannot let him succeed – and we won’t.
[applause]
I am proud of the response from Canadians who are making their voices heard and their wallets felt. I am grateful for how our provinces are stepping up to the fight, because when we are united, we are Canada strong.
[applause]
The Canadian government has rightly retaliated with our own tariffs, designed to have maximum impact in the United States and minimum impact here in Canada. My government will maintain these tariffs until the Americans show us respect —
[applause]
— and join us in making credible, reliable commitments to free and fair trade, as Chrystia did.
In the meantime, we will ensure that all proceeds from our tariffs are used to protect our workers.
…
America is not Canada. And Canada will never, ever will be part of America in any way, shape, or form.
[cheering and applause]
We didn’t ask for this fight. we didn’t ask for this fight. it will Canadians are always ready when someone else drops the gloves.
So the Americans, they should make no mistake. In trade, as in hockey, Canada will win.
